The latest Recommended Grass and Clover Lists for 2017/2018 feature eleven new varieties of ryegrass and one red clover. The List, to be launched at the Grassland & Muck event at Stoneleigh on May 24th, will be available online on the same day.

The RL is jointly funded by the British Society of Plant Breeders and the AHDB levy board through its Dairy and Beef & Lamb sectors. Trials data is supplied by AFBI; Barenbrug; DLF; DSV; IBERS; NIAB-TAG and the SRUC, while selections are made after testing for attributes such as yield, persistency, quality and disease resistance.

“The Lists give details on the performance and characteristics of each variety, helping farmers make informed decisions alongside their seed merchants about the ones that best meet their needs,” says AHDB senior scientist Dr Liz Genever. “Varieties are rigorously tested for factors such as total and seasonal yield, feed quality, disease and persistence.”

The publication also includes technical information for farmers on the management of reseeds and maximising the productivity of their grassland.

As well as the hardcopies, the 2017/2018 RGCL handbook and the full lists for merchants will be published on the beefandlamb.ahdb.org.uk/returns and britishgrassland.com/rgcl websites from May 24th 2017.
