Harpers Farm Supplies, the rural retail division Harpers Feeds, opens a brand new store in its home town of Holsworthy in Devon at the end of this month.

Harpers Feeds, which marks its 25th anniversary since being founded by Bill Harper this year, was acquired by Massey Feeds in 2012. While Massey Feeds retails feed products from each of its four mill sites, this is the first move into a full agri-retail operation, although the business says it is determined to become a major force in the sector.

Mr Harper says the new store represents the biggest investment in agri-retailing in the region for several years.  The store is adjacent to the Harpers Feeds mill on the same industrial estate in Holsworthy and is just south of the market.  Housed in a new dedicated building on a two acre site, the store comprises 3,500 sq ft of shop space including a 1,700 sq ft mezzanine; a 4,000 sq ft outside yard and plentiful car and vehicle parking on the two acre site.

“With the development of the new cattle market in Holsworthy many farmers are using the town’s industrial estate to source goods and services,” explains director Bill Harper. “We were soon told by farmers that they wanted to be able to pick up feed and other products from one site.  This, coupled with our need for more finished product storage for our expanding feed business, led to submitting a planning request for a retail and storage site.”

Store operations manager David Quance adds: “With general consolidation in the farm and rural retail sector, our aim is to give customers a unique way to source the products they need for their businesses, whatever the scale.  We will be stocking over 10,000 product lines covering everything from animal health products and feed, through fencing, animal handling and lubricants to hand tools, pet food and protective clothing. This will include an extensive range of own-brand products, and we will also be the UK sole distributor for Arrowquip cattle handling systems.”
