Proagrica, the agricultural data business, has acquired SST Software, the US-based precision agriculture specialist. It says the move will grow its presence in North America, particularly in the inputs distribution and agronomy sectors.

The company, a division of Anglo Dutch RELX, includes the Farmers Weekly trade titles and Farmplan and Gatekeeper software suites alongside its Agility agricultural data platform. It has entered into a definitive agreement to buy SST Software, with the deal expected to complete this quarter.

SST was founded 20 years ago in the state of Oklahoma, and has offices in Brazil, South Africa and Australia. It collects and analyses farm data to provide insight and decision support to agronomists and growers through its SST Summit, FarmRite and Sirrus brands and the agX digital platform.

“This is an important commitment to Proagrica’s development, particularly in North America”, says Graeme McCracken, managing director of Proagrica. “Our two businesses will combine solutions, customer focus and vision to deliver a unique solution to provide insight into the fragmented agricultural supply chain. The combination of Proagrica’s key competencies of data connectivity and data analytics, and SST’s focus on the agriculture retail and agronomy services segment means we can better serve those who advise and sell to farmers.”

SST chief executive Matt Waits adds: “Today, farmers are collecting more data than ever, but the value of those data assets is not being fully realized due to the lack of digital compatibility in the market.

Retailers, seed companies, pesticide manufacturers and equipment companies all provide valuable services to growers, but growers cannot freely participate with these offerings due to data incompatibility. Proagrica represents a truly independent offering to the market that is focused on unlocking the value of data through seamless and trusted integration of the agricultural supply chain.”
