The US business Battelle is to expand its UK agrochemical formulation laboratory in a move it says will help provide a sustainable industry for the future.

In 2003, Battelle established a formulations team at Havant in Hampshire to develop and analyse agrochemical formulations. This now comprises 30 specialist scientists, enabling all aspects of formulation work to be carried out on a single site. The company has now effectively doubled the space available at the Langstone Technology Park to 13,000 square feet.

The laboratory is GLP accredited and able to perform a range of tests required by regulators worldwide, including efficacy testing; hazard studies and toxicological and ecotoxicological testing. It also develops formulations from inception through to pilot scale production, with support for full scale manufacturing, from bioformulations involving proteins, enzymes and bacteria to emulsifications, oil dispersions and water dispersible granules amongst other forms.

“This expansion allows us to significantly increase our laboratory capacity and demonstrates our commitment to provide independent services to the agrochemical industry in this niche area,” notes Mike Janus, vice-president and general manager of Battelle’s Environment and Infrastructure division. “Battelle is a world leader in the field of agrochemical formulation development, and this increased capacity means that we are able to extend our current service offering.”
