Scotland’s Rural University and College (SRUC) has formed a strategic alliance with the global poultry genetics business Aviagen to increase poultry research and promote its sustainable production to meet rising worldwide demand for the protein.

The partners say their mutual goal is to provide affordable and healthy animal protein in an environmentally sustainable way to a growing world population, often in areas where agricultural resources are limited. This will be achieved through research to deliver applied breeding programmes for sustainable poultry production.

The research will focus on balanced breeding for efficiency, health, welfare and environmental adaptability; supported by further work on poultry nutrition, meat science and management systems.

“This strategic alliance with Aviagen will play a vital role in helping to meet the global demands of poultry production,” states SRUC principal and chief executive Wayne Powell. “It is also another excellent example of SRUC working directly with industry leaders, bringing together world-class research and developing a future skills and training programme fit for the modern world.”
