Multinationals Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) and Marfrig Global Foods are partnering in a plant-based proteins business, initially servicing Brazil before exporting products further afield. Marfrig, based in Brazil, is a major world beef processor and the leading beef patty producer.
The partnership, 40% owned by ADM and 60% by Marfrig, will harness ADM’s expertise in natural ingredients, flavours and plant-based proteins with Marfrig’s distribution networks in food service and retail channels. It aims to develop branded plant-based products with the same taste and texture of beef, with the first plant-based burgers expected to reach the Brazilian market by the end of 2020.
The first phase will supply food service customers such as Burger King, with retail sales following as capacity builds.

Eduardo Miron, Marfrig chief executive adds: “Together, Marfrig and ADM will produce 100% vegetable protein-based burgers with the same taste and texture of beef. The plant-based burgers will complement Marfrig’s product portfolio and be distributed through all our market channels.”
