Feed manufacturer Carrs Billington Agriculture has appointed nutritionist Dr Ruth Lawson to its technical team.

Dr Lawson joins the Cumbria-based company as technical manager from the North Yorkshire feed business WE Jameson & Sons where she was a ruminant nutritionist for the last eight years. She has also spent time in research with the ADAS consultancy ADAS and as a university lecturer. In 2013, WE Jameson was named regional feed merchant of the year in the National Dairy Industry Awards and Dr Lawson UK dairy nutritionist of the year. With a PhD in dairy cow nutrition and behaviour from Leeds University, she has a strong track record in developing effective new products and innovations.

In her new role, Dr Lawson will work with the CBA technical team to help farmer customers improve herd efficiency and profitability. Her specialisms include robotic milking systems, feeding high yielding cows and transition cows.

“I’m really happy to work with all sizes of farm,” notes Dr Lawson. “The important aspect is that they want to improve performance. In the case of robotics, it is a major capital investment and the more efficiently we can make it work through examining the data, the more profitable the farm can become.”

CBA managing director Dr Mark Cole adds: “Ruth’s diverse mix of academic, research and industry experience equip her with a unique ability to take ruminant research results from university to the farm. It is exactly the type of experience that can really add value to any livestock enterprise. Her knowledge and passion for the industry will enable her to provide technical support both on-farm and to the sales team.”
