French crop analyst and consultancy Agritel has been acquired by the London-based commodities and energy information service Argus Media.

Agritel, founded 19 years ago by Michel Portier, offers data and analysis tools to help farmers and agribusinesses manage risk in agricultural commodity markets. Argus, established in 1970, has over 1,000 staff based in 25 offices around the world.

“We have long been an admirer of the way Agritel has developed essential services for the agricultural sector,” says Argus Media chairman and chief executive Adrian Binks. “As we grow our portfolio of services to complement our existing offerings in adjacent sectors of fertiliser and biofuels, we know that their team will be a huge asset in delivering value for clients.”

Mr Portier adds: “Argus’ knowledge and experience in the field of energy and commodities price reporting offers synergies and opportunities for us to implement new solutions in agricultural markets.”

Financial details are not available, but Argus says the Agritel team and management will remain in place.
