BASIS has appointed Susan Twining, chief land use policy adviser at the Country Land & Business Association, as independent chair of the Fertiliser Advisers Certification & Training Scheme (FACTS). She succeeds Dr Susannah Bolton, director of Knowledge Exchange at the AHDB, who has held the post since April 2016.

Ms Twining has over 25 years of experience in agriculture, largely with ADAS where she was most recently director of sustainable farming, before joining the CLA in 2017.

“With ELMS and the Agriculture Bill creeping ever closer, FACTS accredited consultants need to be able to provide on-farm advice with these policy changes in mind,” she explains. “I’m committed to leading the FACTS committee of experienced individuals to ensure we’re guiding both the trainers and course developers to ensure the accreditation matches the on-farm demands. Advisers have a key role to play in helping the industry move forward.”

BASIS chief executive Stephen Jacob adds: “Susan is a great addition to the BASIS team and a perfect fit for the chairmanship – bringing expertise and insight into issues that will affect our FACTS advisers working in crop nutrition.

“Now more than ever, farmers are turning to the consultants for up-to-date advice on agronomy programmes which meet the new demands set out by policy. The FACTS course and accreditation will have a big role to play, to ensure British farmers continue to produce sustainable and profitable food,” he concludes.
