Ÿnsect, the French company that claims to be the world’s largest insect feed protein producer, has acquired the Dutch mealworm protein business Protifarm which specialises in mealworm ingredients for human nutrition.
Ÿnsect was founded in 2011 to produce Molitor and Buffalo mealworms in vertical systems and has raised some $425 million from leading global investors. It has production sites operating in France and the Netherlands and is currently constructing the world’s largest vertical farm at Amiens in France. It supplies the aquaculture, companion animal and human markets, as well as a fertiliser product from the substrate residue.
Protifarm was established in 2015. Its Buffalo mealworm production facility to the east of Amsterdam largely supplies human food markets such as sports nutrition and alternative meat products.
The combined operation will have a production capacity of some 230,000 tonnes of protein ingredients each year when all four plants are on stream.
“We are very excited to welcome Protifarm into our family,” comments Ÿnsect co-Founder and chief executive Antoine Hubert. “Protifarm is a compelling strategic fit for Ÿnsect, perfectly matching our long-term goals and sustainability values. It strengthens our leading position in the global market and allows us to properly address the human and pet food markets with complementary products.”
