There have been a series of reshuffles affecting agriculture in the devolved administrations, following the recent elections.
In Scotland, Mairi Gougeon, MSP for Angus North and Mearns replaces Fergus Ewing as the rural affairs and islands secretary. Popular with the industry, Mr Ewing is to stand down from government after holding the rural affairs brief since 2016.
Edwin Poots who was made Northern Ireland’s Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in January 2020, was elected leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) earlier this month. He will therefore succeed Arlene Foster as First Minister from the end of May 2021. No announcement has been made on his replacement at DAERA yet.
Welsh Member of the Legislative Assembly for Lagan Valley Lesley Griffiths retains her post as Wales’ rural affairs secretary, following first minister Mark Drakeford’s post elections cabinet reshuffle. She has held the portfolio since 2016.
