Fertiliser manufacturer and shipper Yara is to launch a new global business to help farmers earn additional income streams from decarbonisation practices to help mitigate climate change.
Its Agoro Carbon Alliance aims to encourage farmers and growers to adopt climate-positive practices, producing Farm Carbon Credits or climate-smart certified crops in helping to decarbonise food supply chains. Yara says that Agoro Carbon will put farmers at the centre of the process by incentivising and enabling them to change practices, while connecting them to the growing number of businesses looking for ways to achieve their climate pledges.
Agoro Carbon will provide farmers with the agronomic expertise and practical support to successfully sequester carbon in the soil and reduce emissions from the field. In turn, this will generate high-quality, third-party certified carbon credits and increase farmers’ income. Farmers who join Agoro Carbon can potentially generate an additional sustainability income from carbon cropping while maintaining or even increasing crop yields. Yara says that farmers can make the transition to climate-positive practices that best fit their operations and can choose the amount of land enrolled in the programme.
The company intends to leverage its global reach, local farmer relationships and nearly 115 years of proven agricultural innovation in building a more sustainable and profitable food future.
Agoro Carbon Alliance has begun commercial operations with a 30-person team and multiple partnerships based on four continents – Europe, Brazil, India and the US so far. US farmers are expected to produce the first Farm Carbon Credits in 2021, with experts working in the other three locations to help both large and small farmers.
“With the Agoro Carbon Alliance, our goal is to build a new global business that combines Yara’s unique market position with an alliance approach that actively invites others to choose a more climate-positive food future,” explains Terje Knutsen, Yara’s executive vice-president for farming solutions. “We have designed Agoro Carbon to fit farmers’ needs, and to best support them as a trusted partner.”
Yara is inviting farmers, retailers and distributors, co-operatives, technology providers, lenders, insurers and the food industry to join the Agoro Carbon Alliance. It is to host a virtual introduction event on June 8th to formally unveil details of Agoro Carbon, along with information on how to get involved.
