The 2021 BASIS Paul Singleton Award has been won by Vitacress trainee growing manager Lukasz Sipior, with a presentation at the Cereals event last month.
The award is made to the candidate with the highest number of marks for the research element of the Certificate in Crop Protection course. Mr Sipior’s project focused on the effect of UV-C light as a solution to powdery mildew on rosemary.
After graduating from university in Poland, Mr Sipior joined Vitacress in 2010 and has worked his way up to his current position.
“Acquiring a BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection is a real career milestone, and the practical knowledge I’ve gained helps me on a daily basis,” he says. “My project was inspired by a huge loss of crop earlier on in my career. What initially seemed an adverse event, turned out to be the roots of a high-quality study.” His training was provided by Graham Bryant of Growtrain and delivered by trainer Debbie Wedge.
“Networking with like-minded individuals was a highlight of the training course for me,” adds Mr Sipior. “We exchanged advice and information which gave us a valuable understanding of holistic approaches to crop management.” says Mr Sipior.
“Lukasz is proof that determination and a willingness to learn can help individuals achieve their career goals,” says BASIS chief executive Stephen Jacob. “He has expressed an interest in the FACTS qualification and a BASIS diploma, both of which we’d be delighted to welcome him onto in the future.”
