Multinational feed additive company Alltech has acquired the majority interest in Agolin, a Swiss specialist in plant-based additives to raise cattle productivity and sustainability.

Agolin was founded in 2006 in the Swiss town of Bière. Its range of high-quality essential oil blends are proven to optimise feed intake and performance to improve milk and meat production. In 2018, the company’s Agolin Ruminant product was the first feed additive certified by The Carbon Trust for methane reduction in ruminants.

The partners say the synergistic use of their nutritional technologies will help improved animal welfare, feed efficiency and profitability while reducing environmental footprints – including better nitrogen efficiency. The two companies will also explore opportunities to develop new technologies using Alltech’s proven nutrition expertise and Agolin’s essential oil blends.

Agolin already has a presence in Europe, Asia and North America, while Alltech’s majority interest will expand its product availability to additional markets.

“Agolin’s essential oil blends are a complement to Alltech’s proven nutritional technologies, such as Yea-Sacc and Optigen,” says Alltech president and chief executive Dr Mark Lyons. “Governments, consumer brands and retailers are making important commitments to reduce their environmental impact. These commitments rely upon farmers and ranchers, and we are dedicated to supporting them with the best available nutritional technologies to achieve more milk and meat while reducing their environmental footprint.”

For Agolin, managing director Kurt Schaller adds: “This strategic alliance will allow Agolin to grow synergistically through the added technical expertise and global reach of Alltech. This represents a new era for our business, and we look forward to breaking new ground in our industry.”
