Farmer-owned United Oilseeds has appointed Nick Hobson as commodity trading manager. He succeeds Owen Cligg, who is retiring later this year after 15 years with the co-operative.

Mr Hobson worked for Cargill from 2001 to 2006, initially as worldwide feed barley trader and EU grains trader based in Geneva. He then moved to Melbourne in Australia as head trader for the company’s oilseed team there, overseeing trading and procurement for three crush plants.
After leaving Cargill, Mr Hobson returned to Geneva to co-found the biofuels brokerage Sun Commodities. He sold the business in 2014, since when he has managed his consultancy establishing trading and brokerage enterprises in Geneva and raising his young family.
“We are delighted to welcome Nick to the team,” says UO managing director James Warner. “It’s reassuring to know there will be a long handover period between Owen and Nick to ensure we maintain the exceptional standards of service our members have come to expect.”

Mr Cligg joined United Oilseeds in 2009 and has been instrumental in shaping and advancing its trading network and strategies to benefit farmer members. Over his tenure, he has overseen the trading of some 7.5 million tonnes of commodities including peas, beans, linseed, oats, rye and oilseed rape.
“Owen’s departure leaves a noticeable void in our team,” adds Mr Warner. “His immense contributions to our co-operative extend far beyond his expertise in trading. We will sorely miss his witty personality and unique sense of humour, which have left an indelible mark on all who have had the pleasure of working with him. We all wish Owen a very happy and well-deserved retirement.”
